Description of Motive

Medallion from Gjurishte, Sveti Nikole, 14th century, Macedonia

The medallion is an exclusive specimen of medieval jewellery, made of gold and decorated with precious stones.

On the flat surface of the medallion, from thin filigree wire the ornaments are made as a twisted vine. On the top of the medallion are placed two dolphins and in the middle on both sides, two nymphs. The nymphs are performed with the forging technique.

In the middle of medallion is a cross made of five stones from almadin, surrounded by filigree wire.

The medallion by its function is a relic cross and it has a space where sacred relics were kept.
