Description of Motive
Terracotta icons are one of the most exclusive finds in the history of Macedonian archeology. They were found in the Kale site in Vinica and due to their content and shape they are a world rarity in the field of early Christian archeology.
Vinica terracotta icon from the 5th-6th century with an illustrated representation of Psalm 41 from the Old Testament. A rectangular frame shows a figure of a standing deer. In the space behind it are presented two plants with leafy branches that create an ambience of forest vegetation. Below the animal’s abdomen, between its legs, is a spring from which water flows. In the space between the frame is written a Latin text that reads: SICUT CERVUS DESIDERAT AD FONTES AQUARIUM (As the doe longs for water springs).
This verse begins the procession singing in the Roman Church during the Passover vigil before Easter Sunday. Theologically and symbolically, Psalm 41 is a song that expresses a desire for the Lord and His temple.
